• extending young children from using single words to using longer phrases

• the use of word forms like past tense verbs and small words like 'is'

• the formulation of complex sentences using conjunctions like 'after' and 'unless'

• word-finding skills and the use of higher-level vocabulary

• telling stories in a well-sequenced manner that makes sense
