Alternative and
Augmentative Communication

When children are unable to use speech to communicate effectively, they can supplement with other methods, such as Key Word Sign, low-tech systems that use picture communication symbols and voice output devices such as iPads with specific communication apps.

This is particularly helpful for children who have very few words, perhaps related to a disability or to Childhood Apraxia of Speech.  These techniques are usually used to supplement speech, but can be used to replace speech if needed.
